| Emily - My name is Emily Goodson, I’m a grade nine attending Banting Memorial High School, and I’ve had a passion for science since I was little. I have been attending our Regional Science Fair since grade four, and Canada Wide Science Fair since grade seven. Every year I strive to find a way that I can make a difference in the world, and focus my efforts on environmental sciences, and finding innovative ways to combat the environmental crises of today. I enjoy being outdoors, learning about sciences, and sketching. I enjoy volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation centre in my town and helping to make a difference in the lives of the animals. I plan to have a career in environmental sciences and make a difference. This year, Nikki and I chose to create a project focusing on the development of sustainable agriculture and improving the efficiency of agriculture because of the demand for food, and less impact on the environment. We are striving to make a difference, and that led us to this project - one that can impact the world in many positive ways. I would like to encourage other aspiring scientists to pursue their dreams and accomplish their goals. | | Nikki - My name is Nikki van Schaik, and I am a grade 9 student attending Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie, Ontario. I love to be outdoors camping, canoeing, swimming, playing volleyball, skiing, and doing track and field. I do competitive trampoline, and I am currently working on my lifesaving certifications as well as volunteering in aquatics at the YMCA. I first discovered my passion for environmental sciences after taking part in the Regional Science Fair in grade 5. Ever since, I have been participating in the science fair, returning with different innovative environmental projects every year. I attended CWSF last year in Ottawa, and I was determined to return this year. Emily and I chose to do this project because we wanted to find a simple way to increase the productivity and sustainability of agriculture. We have been working on our project for one year, since May 2018, and have been looking forward to this amazing opportunity. I truly enjoy creating science fair projects and plan to have a career related to either environmental science or mathematics. I would strongly encourage other students to create a project and participate in the science fair as well. |

Comparing the Effects of Aerobically Decomposed Waste on Plant Development

Experimentation was conducted to determine which method of composting benefits plants most: vermicompost, rolling compost or box compost. The purpose of this project was to discover a method to improve the efficiency of agriculture while minimizing environmental impacts. Implementing compost reduces food waste, reduces carbon emissions, helps meet global food demand and improves agricultural efficiency. |
