Julia - My name is Julia Nguyen and I am currently a Grade 8 student in the SciTech Program at Tomken Road Middle School in Mississauga, Ontario. This will be my second year attending the Canada Wide Science Fair, and I look forward to another exciting week. My most passionate interests lie in the field of science, hence the reason I enjoy participating in science fair. I aspire to one day work in the field of medicine and contribute my time to helping society. I am a very passionate and persistent person who enjoys learning at every given opportunity. I engage myself in numerous activities in and out of school in both the athletics and academics department. I am also partaking in several other competitions including FLL Provincials, Skills Provincials, and Destination Imagination Globals. I love listening to music, and I encourage this passion through playing instruments like the piano and guitar. This year, my partner and I took an interest in water purification, specifically the issues in third world countries due to the lack of safe water. Therefore, we addressed the problem through our science fair in hopes of making a difference in the lives of those impacted by the crisis.
Anushka - My name is Anushka Hasija and I am currently in Grade 8 in the Sci Tech Program at Tomken Road Middle School, in Mississauga, Ontario. I have a variety of hobbies and interests, including reading, writing, playing the piano, listening to music, playing sports, singing, and dancing. My favourite subjects lie in the fields of math, science, and technology, and I aspire to work in the medical field. I consider myself to be an outgoing person who is always looking forward to learning new things and gaining new experiences. I strive to look for new experiences that will help me attain knowledge. In addition to CWSF, this year I am also participating in First Lego League globals, Destination Imagination globals, and Skills Ontario provincials. This year my partner and I took an interest in water purification, specifically the issues in Africa due to lack of clean water, because we wanted to address a topic that impacts people globally. In the future, we will look into alternate materials for our topic and investigate on how our solution can be implemented in third world countries. This is my first year participating in CWSF and I am really looking forward to it!

Water for the Thirsty World
Challenge:Health
Category:Junior
Region:Peel
City:Mississauga, ON
School:Tomken Road Senior P.S.
Abstract:Millions are annually infected with waterborne diseases by drinking pathogen-infested water. To address this issue, two water filters were created using clay and colloidal silver to eliminate bacteria. The filters were tested with four water samples. Results were measured using a TDS meter, pH strips, and agar plates to culture any E. Coli bacteria. The experimental results suggested that both filters can successfully eliminate bacteria.
