Jackson - My name is Jackson Price and I live in Dawson Creek British Columbia. I am 12 years old and in grade 7 at L'Ecole Frank Ross in a French immersion program. This will be my first time attending CWSF. I like to play chess and do sports. I play golf, baseball and basketball. I have a blue belt in Kyokushin karate and am a Royal Canadian Air Cadet from 353 Mile Zero Squadron. I also work part-time job at Menchie's Frozen Yogurt. I have multiple long-term goals which include attending MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and study aerospace or chemical engineering, getting a black belt in karate and making a lot of money. I enjoy science and doing chemistry experiments. I was inspired to do this project because it looked interesting. I am interested in exploring the effects of methane gas and exothermic reactions. I would tell other students to find a project you are passionate about. I look forward to meeting scientists from all over Canada. | Liam - My name is Liam Trasy, I am 12 years old and I am so excited to be a part of the 2015 Canada Wide Science Fair with my best friend and project partner. I am a grade 7 French Immersion student at École Frank Ross in Dawson Creek, BC. I thoroughly enjoy math and sciences and reading fantasy novels such as Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I am also a sports fanatic. I play Peewee recreational hockey with the Dawson Creek Minor Hockey Association. In the Spring, I play Peewee Baseball, as well as basketball and soccer on our school intermediate team. In April 2015, we won the grade 6/7 basketball championship in our school district. My goal after graduation is to study Electrical Engineering at the Massechusetts Institute of Technology. My partner was my inspiration to do this project idea after he read a book on thermal chemistry. My advice to others thinking of doing a project would be to choose a topic of great interest to you and enjoy learning the results. |
| Jackson Price, Liam Trasy Release the Heat
Challenge: | Discovery | Category: | Junior | Region: | Northern British Columbia | City: | Dawson Creek, BC, Arras, BC | School: | Ecole Frank Ross Elementary | Abstract: | Disposable heat packs give off heat due to reactions of iron powder with oxygen creating iron oxide and heat energy. Our experiment tested whether increasing the amount of oxygen applied to the iron powder would increase the amount of heat produced by the exothermic reaction. We found our hypothesis to be true but that the reaction was limited by the amount of the active ingredient. |
