Shawn - I am currently in grade 12 at Walkerville Collegiate Institute in Windsor, Ontario. I am an active leader in my school and community; serving as governor general of Walkerville's student parliament and assistant captain of the boy's soccer team. Our project started during a co-op at the University of Windsor's Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. We were inspired by our love for the sciences and inquisitive nature. We plan on possibly continuing the project by doing further DNA analysis of our samples. | Mahnoz - I have many interests, ranging from music, visual arts, and sports to chemistry, biology, and environmental sciences. I am a part of the WCCA program for visual art and music, and am an aspiring neurosurgeon. On the side, I volunteer at several events such as the Cystic Fibrosis Princess Ball, school events, and fundraising. I was also a part of the the pit orchestra in the Walkerville production "Anything Goes". I have been an honour roll student all throughout high school. For nearly two years, I have been working in Dr. Weisener’s lab at GLIER researching the effects of Acid Mine Drainage and possible passive treatment systems that offer natural methods of reducing the acid load. Dr. Weisener had a similar ongoing experiment in New Zealand, and we thought to use a local waste to clean acid mine drainage. Throughout my experience, I was taught basic lab procedures and had the amazing opportunity to learn how to operate the SEM. This experience expanded my horizons and allowed me to develop crucial skills that are applicable in any setting. Hopefully other students will strive to work on a project as it greatly increases ones knowledge and is alot of fun. |
| Shawn Tanner, Mahnoz Akhtari Using Zebra Mussels as a Water Filtration Substrate
Défi: | Environnement | Catégorie: | Sénior | Région: | Windsor | Ville: | Windsor, ON | École: | Walkerville S.S. | Sommaire: | The experiment was performed to find an alternative way to treat dangerous and toxic waste water. We experimented with using zebra mussels as a material for filtration. Zebra mussels have, in recent years, become an invasive species that is negatively effecting the Great Lakes. The core of the project is using a pest, zebra mussels, in an environmentally and economically positive way; water filtration. |
