Holly Salem is a young scientist in the 7th grade at Claude E. Garton School, Thunder Bay, Ontario. Holly has great interest in health and engineering sciences, and she likes researching in areas that influence the everyday life of people. She dreams of becoming a famous scientist who can discover a cure for diseases like Diabetes and Cancer. Holly is a very avid reader and explorer, too. She recently participated with her research project titled “The Baby Life Saver - BLS” in the Northwestern Ontario Regional Science Fair held in Thunder Bay in April 2015. She has gained several awards in the science fair, e.g., the NWO Science Fair Award of Excellence, the LifeLab Science Award, and a trip to the Canada-Wide Science Fair 2015, for her innovative idea and unique device that can save babies from suffocating in cribs. Holly loves outdoor activities, swimming, tennis, and horseback riding. She is also a professional young soccer player. Her massage to young people at her age is to change the world with their bright ideas to make people healthier and happier! |

Garton | Abstract: | Choking, suffocation and strangulation are ranked as leading causes of unintentional injury deaths in babies. The purpose of this project is to prevent suffocating in babies while in crib. In order to accomplish this, I have created a new device that allows babies to freely turn side to side yet prevents them from roll in prone position and become in a dangerous situation. |
