Nora - I am a level 2 student at Holy Heart High School, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. I am an active member of my school and my community. I serve on the student council, and am a member of various bands and sports teams including the Senior Girls Volleyball team and the Ultimate Frisbee team. I also run a knitting group at a local retirement home and help coach the Special Olympic Snowshoeing Team. I love travelling and taking part in unique educational experiences. Last summer I completed a Leadership in Training program in Ontario and embarked on a 10 day canoe and portage trip which was incredible! This summer I am very excited to take part in the Students on Ice Arctic Expedition! I also enjoy running, yoga and reading. I am interested in Science and Medicine and hope to pursuit a career in Medicine. I am also interested in global issues and giving back to my community. The idea behind our project stemmed from an interest in Medicine as well as solving a local issue in our community. We hope to further refine our model. Hopefully it can be incorporated into the surgical resident training program at Memorial University.
Grace - My name is Grace Clarke and I am a level 2 student at Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John's, Newfoundland. I enjoy ultimate frisbee, swimming, rowing, playing guitar and travelling. I am participating in an exchange program next year in Germany, as well as a women's leadership program, "Bootcamp for Brains" in Ottawa during the summer. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends as well as reading, yoga, hiking, and baking. I have a passion for coaching kids sports, I have coached hockey and figure skating and I am currently coaching swimming with the local swim team. I have torn both of my ACLs so I am hoping to pursue a career in the medical field and hopefully work with sports injuries and/or kids. My project stemmed out of my interest in medicine, as well as the local issue of the lack of trauma and neurosurgical care units in rural areas of Newfoundland.

It's only Brain Surgery! Developing a Simulation Tool to Train Non-Neurosurgeons
Challenge:Health
Category:Senior
Region:Eastern Newfoundland
City:St. John's, NL
School:Holy Heart High School
Abstract:Long distances and transport times to definitive Neurosurgical care in rural environments may jeopardize outcomes from severe head trauma. Urgent Neurosurgical intervention by Community General Surgeons may be beneficial in these regions. We developed and evaluated an inexpensive, anatomically accurate craniotomy simulation tool that could be used to train Community General Surgeons and trainees to perform emergency craniotomies as indicated for severe head injuries.
