Biography
Hi! My name is Angela Zhang. I’m a grade 11 student from Waterloo, ON. I got the inspiration for my project after discovering how big of a problem anthropogenic noise was in oceans. Anthropogenic noise is more than just an annoyance; it physically harms marine life, causing bleeding, hemorrhaging, and mass strandings. My project involves using data that researchers have collected from satellite tracking tags to predict where whales (who are really sensitive to noise) are going to be. I’m interested in science because science answers the fundamental questions in life and is the driving force of innovation. My favorite pastimes include reading, writing, art, and programming. In addition to that, I also enjoy playing chess and table tennis. I’m involved in running my school’s science club, where we plan fun weekly activities, such as experiments and design challenges. I've been involved in my school's DECA for three years, qualifying to ICDC in 2016 and 2018 for SMG and FOR. Last summer, I attended SHAD at Western, where I met and got to know many talented students from all over Canada. If you're looking to start a project, begin by researching any topic that you're really interested in!

Abstract:Anthropogenic noise is a major problem in oceans; affecting the behavior of marine life by masking sounds used for communication and causing stress levels to hike, which has been shown to lead to mass strandings in whales. This project involves predicting the presence of whales in a certain location at a certain time given past records of whale ID tagging, for re-routing ships.
