Emily - My name is Emily Miki. I am a grade 8 student in Burnaby, British Columbia. I am an active member in my school and community. I have joined various sports teams both in and out of my school. Some of the activities that I enjoy doing in my free time are field hockey, soccer and baking. The inspiration for my project was that I have several family members and friends with eczema. I wanted to do a study that might help others and be beneficial towards society. Advice to other students wanting to do a project: think outside of the box, be creative!
Emily - I’m Emily, a grade 8 student from British Columbia. An athlete, I’m involved in many sports, including volleyball, basketball, netball, and snowboarding. I enjoy creative writing and art, which I’ve won several awards for. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and editing. My partner and I wanted to find the most effective products to treat eczema because it’s something that affects numbers of individuals. For future investigations, we’d like to find eczema-modelling skin models, and experiment with more oil-based moisturizers. We’d also like to vary temperatures and better-control the environment of our tests. My advice for people to thinking of doing a project is choosing something you’re interested and passionate about.

Which Moisturizer Best Treats Eczema?
Challenge:Health
Category:Junior
Region:Greater Vancouver
City:Burnaby, BC
School:Burnaby South Secondary
Abstract:Our study looked at the effectiveness of household moisturizers in treating eczema, a common skin condition. We measured how much moisture is retained by a gelatin skin model when covered by 6 different moisturizers over a one week period at different temperatures. We found our petroleum and natural oil based products worked the best, compared to our water based moisturizers.
