Biography
I am a grade 11 student at Dr John Hugh Gillis Regional High School. I volunteer in community theater productions as well as at a local nursing home. Through my position on the Nova Scotia Ombudsman Youth Council, I am able to be an advocate for youth voice and consideration in the decisions that affect them. Through the organization Children First Canada, I contributed to the drafting of the Canadian Children's Charter to highlight the importance of supporting youth in Canada. I am a member of my school concert and stage band, and I am also a member of my school's SAGE (Students Advocating for a Greener Environment) committee. I plan to study engineering in an effort to unite future development with a consciousness for the fragility of our environment. My strong belief in the importance of protecting and preserving our environment has largely informed my project, in which I attempted to reduce biofoul settlement on boat hulls using novel fiberglass coatings that would be less harmful than the current antifouling paints. To those considering doing a project, find a problem that you care about and try to solve it to make some aspect of the world a better place!

No Harm, No Foul: Eco-friendly Anti-fouling

Abstract:The effects of novel anti-fouling treatments for fiberglass boat hulls were assessed. Biofoul settlement on beeswax and food-grade grease treatments were studied as a less harmful alternative to anti-fouling paint. While the beeswax and grease treatments were not as effective as the anti-fouling paint to discourage biofoul settlement, the treatments observed a statistically significant settlement reduction when compared to bare fiberglass after an eight-week period.
