Surina - My name is Surina Grover and I am currently a grade 12 student at Medicine Hat High School. My favourite subjects include: biology, chemistry and anatomy, and I plan to pursue a career in Pediatrics. Apart from academics, I also have a black-belt in Taekwon-Do, and participate in my school's cross country and badminton teams. Additionally, I am an active member of Hat High’s: Student Council, Me to We, and Q&A club. This is my first time attending CWSF and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to complete this research project! For others that are interested in participating in science fair, I suggest you think about a subject or topic that sparks your interest. Our interest in the health sciences is what motivated my partner and I to look deeper into the potential anti-carcinogenic properties of natural compounds. Upon further research, we began to develop a passion for microbiology and dedicated our time to completing our project. Science fair has been a rewarding experience that has given me the opportunity to deepen my understanding and appreciation for the sciences and I know research will be an integral part of my future academic endeavours! | Shahmeer - My name is Shahmeer Ahmad and I'm a grade twelve student at Medicine Hat High School. I've always had a passion for science, sports and finance. Outside of science fair, I actively compete in Tennis, Badminton and Track and Field. I have also obtained a black belt in Taekwondo after three years of rigorous training. Aside from athletics, I am an executive member on my school's debate team, the treasurer on the Hat High Graduate Executive Council, and a member of the Q&A Club where I volunteer as a tutor. During my very limited spare time, I like to relax by hanging out with my friends! Although I'm still not sure on what I want to pursue as a career, I plan on pursuing a degree in commerce. My advice for students who are thinking about doing a project is this: pick a project that revolves around an idea that interests you. A lot of time and effort goes into a science fair project but it's definitely worth it if you're studying something that you have a passion for. It also helps if you have an amazing partner and mentor like I did! |

Défi: | Santé | Catégorie: | Sénior | Région: | Southeast Alberta | Ville: | Medicine Hat , AB, Medicine Hat, AB | École: | Medicine Hat High School | Sommaire: | We studied the ability of naturally derived compounds to induce cell death on colorectal cancer cells. The anti-carcinogenic properties of our natural compounds were compared to Taxol’s ability to induce cell death on the HCT-8 cell. We also tested the differentiation properties of the natural compounds in order to determine the compatibility between exosomal delivery and the use of naturally derived drugs in chemotherapy treatment. |
