Biography
Shiv Patel is a grade 8 gifted student currently attending Alexander Graham Bell P.S. in Ajax, Ontario. He is involved and has won various S.T.E.A.M. activities like the Rube Goldberg Competition, Math Kangaroo, Gauss Contest, Math Caribou and the Future City International Competition. This year, Shiv’s team designed a future city, won 1st at the regional competition and won the best residential zone award at the international finals, held in Washington, D.C. At school, he enjoys language, french, science, and art but science is definitely his favourite. He has been participating in the regional science fair ever since grade 5. It is an activity he looks forward to every single year and recommends it to others. In his spare time he likes to read, write, play sports, and create artwork. In the community, he is an Air Cadet. He got inspired to do this project one day when he was eating cereal. It tasted a little weird/odd, so, he read the ingredients list and researched the types of preservatives in it, experimented with them, and checked their effectiveness. What he recommends for other students thinking about doing a project is to choose a topic you’re interested in.

Natural versus Synthetic Preservatives
Challenge:Discovery
Category:Junior
Region:Durham
City:Ajax, ON
School:Alexander Graham Bell P.S.
Abstract:The purpose of my experiment was to find a suitable and very effective natural preservative that could maintain the quality and safety of food. Therefore, the preservative will not have any negative effects on the consumer’s health and will act as a replacement for synthetic preservatives. I concluded that citric acid, fresh garlic, and salt are all very effective alternatives to synthetic preservatives.
