My name is Jonah Norman. I am thirteen years old and am in grade 8 at Christ the King school in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Through my school, I play the alto saxophone, school sports and participate in science fairs. I am also on student council as the Co-president. My favorite subjects are math and science. Outside of school, I play baseball, hockey and club volleyball on competitive teams. I enjoy swimming, golf, chess and fishing. I also volunteer my time with charities and organize annual toy and coat drives for children in need. My family members work in helping professions. They encounter vulnerable people whose safety is compromised because they are “under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. I wanted to see if I could create a device that would identify if the vulnerable person was having a medical emergency. “S.M.A.R.T “is a wireless technology that could be used by emergency personnel, law enforcement or any other agencies that are responsible for keeping people safe. My next step is to market my innovation. My advice is to find a project topic that interests you. If you enjoy it, science will be fun. |
| Jonah Norman Keeping Vulnerable People Safe the S.M.A.R.T Way
Challenge: | Innovation | Category: | Junior | Region: | Bison | City: | Winnipeg, MB | School: | Christ the King | Abstract: | Many helping professions encounter vulnerable people whose safety is compromised because they are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. I created a wireless S.M.A.R.T (Safety Monitor and Remote Tracking) bracelet that measures and transmits key vital signs to the S.M.A.R.T monitoring application. This technology will help law enforcement and other agencies identify if someone is having a medical emergency and help prevent in-custody deaths. |
