Biography
Hello, I’m Vijeth Castelino! I live in Peace River, Alberta. Ever since I was little, I had an immense passion for animals, but sadly I had an allergy to quite a few common household pets. Two years back my family started Urban farming. We began raising a flock of backyard chickens. Raising our birds was an extremely fun experience and came with many benefits, but one difficulty of keeping them, were the harsh Canadian winters. Our first year, our birds were not in pristine health so the following year I decided to find the best diet or proportion of foods to feed them, to ensure they maintain their egg production, their feather growth and activity. During this project I learned the effects a diet can have on a bird. I was also able to find a well proportioned diet that would aid my birds to receive a well balanced diet, during the winter time.

Abstract:In my project, I studied the best chicken feed to feed an egg laying hen during winter. I tested 4 different diets and found which proportion of nutrients will benefit them the most. I hope my research will help farmers or backyard chicken keepers to make sure their birds will be in pristine health during the colder months.
