Biography
Hello, my name is Derek Hood and I am a grade eight honors student from Seven Persons, Alberta, with many interests. One of which is quantum physics and Science Fair. Last year I received a bronze medal in Physics and Mathematics at the Canda Wide Science Fair in Quebec. This year I received the Best Over-all project in grade 7 & 8 at the 2007 Kiwanis Regional Science Fair and am fortunate to return to the Canada Wide this year. I also participate in many sports including fencing, soccer, basketball (A and B teams), skiing, volleyball, badminton and track and field. I live on an acreage with many animals. And besides helping my family with daily chores, I find the time to volunteer as coach/referee in fencing and soccer. I also help to organize the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Horseshow. I have a younger sister who rides in horseshows. I recently received the Leaders of Tomorrow Award from the City of Medicine Hat for my volunteer work in the community. I have traveled across Canada three times and as far south as Florida. I hope to become a Nuclear Physicist and work at DRDC, located in Suffield, Alberta.

Abstract:My project studied the effects of temperature on an inorganic phosphorescent material. Glow Inc., Ultra green powder was radiated with a Lite Book. Using a spectrometer, I was able to measure the re-emitted light spectrum and calculated the decay. I found that heating phosphor increased the intensity of the re-emission and created a second decay curve, compared to the cooled and the room temperture samples.
