| My name is Julia Sampson. I'm a grade 9 French Immersion student at Elizabeth Sutherland School, in Halifax Nova Scotia. This is my 2nd year at CWSF and I'm very excited to return. Prostate Cancer is a growing concern in today's society, both my grandfather and uncle had been diagnosed with prostate cancer recently. In my project I wanted to see if Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen could kill prostate cancer cells. In future, I would like to see the effects of these two drugs on healthy prostate cells. I have competed in my regional science fair 3 times. I've won the passion for science award, the best chemistry project award twice, 3 excellence medals, a scholarship to Saint-Marys University, along with a toxicology award from last years CWSF. Outside of school I am engaged in many activities, I've been trained in dance and piano for 11 years, voice for 4 years, I also play trumpet in band and belong to youth honour choir. I competed in ski racing for 7 years and I began coaching at the Martock Ski Race Club this year. My advice would be to find a subject that you're passionate about and don't give up on it. |

Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen: Possible Cures for Prostate Cancer?

I decided to test whether two common painkillers could kill prostate cancer cells. I exposed LNCaP and PC-3 prostate cancer cells to different concentrations of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen for 24 hours. Both drugs killed over 50% of the LNCaP and PC-3 cancer cells, Ibuprofen was much more toxic in both cell lines. |
