Biography
My name is Breann Squires and I am a grade 11 student from Wilkie, Saskatchewan. I currently attend McLurg High School. My hobbies include reading, gardening, and cooking. For as long as can remember, I have loved learning new, interesting things. My future plans include going to university and studying food science. Inspiration for my project came from walking down the aisle of a grocery store and wondering just how much artificial dye was in all these products. In my project, I tested the amounts of blue 1, red 40, and yellow 5 in various sports drinks. I also researched possible negative effects of these dyes. My advice to students thinking about doing a project would be to not procrastinate and, most important, have pick a topic that interests you!

It's to Dye For
Challenge:Discovery
Category:Senior
Region:Northwest Saskatchewan
City:Wilkie, SK
School:McLurg High School
Abstract:Most foods contain dye additives to make them appear attractive to consumers. This is especially true in the case of sports drinks. The purpose of this experiment was to test the concentration of blue 1, red 40, and yellow 5 in nine different sports drinks using a makeshift spectrophotometer. The photo-resistance of nine samples was compared to the photo-resistance of solutions with a known concentration.
