Biographie
My name is Stella Bowles and I am a Grade 7 student at Bridgewater Jr./Sr. High School, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. My science fair project started when I learned about straight pipes in the LaHave River. I was very upset to learn untreated sewage flowed in my river and no one was stopping this illegal practice. I shared my testing results on social media and quickly got the attention of residents and politicians. There is now a $17 million dollar program to rid the LaHave River of straight pipes. I am the 2016 recipient of the TD Future City Builders award from Evergreen Brick Works. I am the 2017 recipient of the Canadian Wildlife Federation: The Wade Luzny Youth Conservation Award and one of 2017 Canada’s Top 25 Under 25 Environmentalists from Starfish Canada. I have teamed up with Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation to do youth workshops and I also do presentations. My hobbies include making mittens made out of recycled sweaters, I have a small business making strawberry jam, and I am a hockey player. My Peewee A team won the Provincial Championship title this year. My future plans involve science, the environment and possibly politics.

Sommaire:The purpose of this study is to determine if fecal bacteria levels in the LaHave River, Nova Scotia, are safe for recreational activities such as swimming. Water samples, analyzed for enterococci bacteria, are found to be in exceedance of Health Canada’s water quality guidelines. Potential bacteria sources are investigated and additional sample sites are monitored in an effort to better understand this pollution problem.
