Biography
I am a Grade 10 student at Horton High School where I participate in numerous extracurricular clubs and activities like the senior concert band and jazz band for which I play alto saxophone. I am also part of the Acadia University Symphonic Band where I play clarinet. I love to play piano and I am currently completing my Grade 10 RCM requirements. I have won numerous competitions for piano and last year I competed in the junior piano category at the Provincial Music Festival. In addition, I volunteer at the local hospital as well as other community events and activities, and I am working on the Silver Level for the Duke of Edinburgh award. I also love sports, I play tennis and was a competitive swimmer, and I came first in provincials on my school’s badminton team. In the past I have done multiple science fair projects but this is my first time at the CWSF and I am very excited!

The Use of Yeast to Prevent Fungal Diseases in Horticultural Produce
Challenge:Discovery
Category:Intermediate
Region:Annapolis Valley
City:Wolfville, NS
School:Horton High School
Abstract:A variety of natural yeasts isolated from carrots and grapes were identified and tested for their biocontrol properties for the prevention of Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum. The yeasts were inoculated along with the fungal spores during in vitro and in vivo tests. The yeast Candida famata produced inhibitory zones which indicates that it has biocontrol effects against B. cinerea and potential horticultural applications.
