| Monis - I am 13 years old, in grade 8 at Brockville Collegiate Institute. My passion is to try new things, be it sports, science or music. I played in the school teams of badminton, volley ball, soccer, and basketball. I learned to play guitar and piano. I love to take leadership roles and I am a member of student council and WEB. I love math, but my true interests lie in science. Exploring how and why things happen and experimenting new ways to do things. I like to travel and go on adventures. I want to become a neuro surgeon. Since farmers plant their seeds in spring once the ground defrosts we thought if the water temperature would have any effect on the germination. The idea was to explore whether variation in water temperature would have an impact on the seed germination. The outcome can have a potential savings for farmers and even normal household who plant their seeds in spring. We tested the rate of germination and we could further investigate by planting seeds and measuring the effects on actual growth of the plants. A project should have a real life relevance and should be simple and fun to perform. | | Jack - I attend Brockville Collegiate Institute in Brockville, Ontario and this is my second CWSF. I play many sports including Hockey, Soccer and baseball. At school I enjoy science, math and gym, Outside of school I like to play with friends, explore and learn. When I grow up I would like to become an anesthesiologist or a pediatrician. Overall I have a great childhood and a loving family, I'm quite the lucky kid! When we began this project we had no idea that we would end up spending a week in Ottawa and speaking with some of the greatest minds Canada has to offer. If I could give any advice to kids that will take part in future science fairs it would be, Its not always the idea, It’s how you represent it and how much detail and work you put into it. In life my motto is that you should always try new things, put yourself out there and take part in as many activities as possible! |

Germination Determination

We watered seeds at 11 different temperatures for 10 days. We discovered that water temperatures around 50°C had the best rate and speed of germination. Warming irrigation water could save the agriculture sector a lot of money and time. |
