Biography
My name is Mary, I enjoy art, reading, and science. I have competed in the Central Interior Science Exhibition 3 times. In the most recent science fair, I won best in fair, and am super excited about coming to the Canada Wides. When I go to university, I want to study to be a quantum physicist. I got the inspiration for my project by learning about how cell phones emit radiation, and that children are more sensitive to this radiation. My advice to students thinking about doing a project is to choose something they enjoy, because they're going to be spending a lot of time working on it!

Cell Phones and Children: A Cautionary Tale
Challenge:Health
Category:Junior
Region:Central Interior British Columbia
City:Prince George, BC
School:
Abstract:Children are not adequately protected by the regulations for radiofrequency (RF) radiation exposure specifically in regards to cell phones. In an effort to protect children from RF radiation I tested 6 different cell phones at 8 different distances to determine which offers the most significant reduction in the RF radiation intensity. The results showed 80mm offered an 82% reduction, anything further showed only marginal decreases.
