Any eligible student can participate in the DRSF regardless of whether they have completed their project for a school science fair, a library science fair, a club or extracurriclar group science fair or  independently for a home-school project or just out of individual curiosity and passion.  Students are not required to have participated in and/or won at a school or other local science fair before entering the DRSF.

Projects are assigned to one of four categories - biological science, physical science, computer science and engineering. But projects can examine all aspects in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) including biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics and engineering as well as topics such as environmental science, conservation, energy and sustainability. New areas of interest include gaming and the development of computer and mobile phone apps.
