Vitamin D is a fat-soluble steroid hormone that is essential to health. Previous studies show that when ingested, this vitamin is beneficial to prevention of cancers, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin D binds to the vitamin D receptors, resulting in the transcription of genes that induces apoptosis and inhibits the cell cycle. Therefore, vitamin D is both anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic. rnrnMost individuals acquire vitamin D from sunlight. Unfortunately, there is well-documented causal relationship between sunlight exposure and the development of skin cancer. This study can promote a paradigm shift in the relationship between sunlight, vitamin D and the inhibition of cancer. rnrn
