Effect of Soft Tissue on Torsional and Compressional Strength of Porcine Spines

Currently, testing on porcine spines does not standardize the amount of soft tissue surrounding the vertebrae. I compared the strength of spine sections from C1-C6 with and without the surrounding soft tissue to determine if a standard should be used. The spines were potted in dental cement and loaded into an Instron 8874 hydraulic testing system. Torsional and compressional tests were done.
