The amount of plastic we use daily continue to increasing over the years. We create and use plastic because it is a cheap and versatile material, but we do not realize how the plastic materials we use is harming the earth today. Through this project, we have realized that God has given us a conscience in which we can use in order to make the world a better place. He tells us to leave the Earth better than how we found it, and by creating environmentally friendly plastic, we are slowly progressing towards our goal. The purpose for our experiment was to find the best environmentally friendly alternative for regular plastic. We wanted to see if we could create a plastic that is safe for our environment, health, and wildlife. Our project was to create environmentally friendly homemade plastics. We used a regular plastic bag, and created 2 different types of homemade environmentally friendly plastic made out of natural cornstarch, water, natural vinegar, and glycerine and put it through 4 tests. These 4 tests were to find its strength, flexibility, appearance, and moldability. After putting these 3 types of plastic through our 4 tests, we found that regular petroleum plastic overall had the best outcome in appearance, strength, flexibility, and moldability. Though, through our experiments, we have also seen that our homemade plastic still needs improvement in strength, appearance, flexibility, and moldability, and as of right now, we see that it is not yet possible to replace regular plastic. We have now seen that recipe 1 is better than recipe 2 in strength and flexibility, while recipe 2 is better in appearance and moldability which contradicts half our hypothesis. However, now we see that if the formula of the homemade environmentally friendly plastic is further improved, it has the potential to replace regular petroleum plastic.
