Julie - My name is Julie Xu and I am a Grade 12 student at Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary, Alberta. My two big goals in life are to constantly learn and self-improve, as well as helping others in any way I can and to the best of my ability. I was born in China and immigrated to Canada when I was almost nine years old. This allows me to truly be the best of what both cultures have to offer. In line with my goal of self-improvement, I am a very busy person. I am Yearbook Editor at my school of almost 2000 students, I am conducting researching at U of C with Dr. Surette regarding cystic fibrosis (our project), I am part of the Swim & Dive team, I have volunteered weekly at the Public Library for the past three years, and I am a Certificate IB student. Those are just a small sample of what I do each day. My life hobby, however, is art, because I love the freedom of expressing myself creatively. In the fall, I will begin my post-secondary education at the University of Pennsylvania studying Bioengineering. I can't wait.

Abstract:Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most commonly fatal inherited diseases. This study looked at Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an aerobe, and Prevotella, an anaerobe recently found to exist in CF lungs. The purpose was to investigate the conditions under which these two organisms can be co-cultured. Results showed that in the presence of Prevotella, Pseudomonas growth was enhanced. Interspecies interaction was definitely observed.
