Olivia Hamilton is an honour student, student council representative and lover of pi at Superior Middle School in Bathurst, New Brunswick. In 2011, she participated in the Provincial Heritage Fair Showcase and recently competed in the Bathurst Music Festival in the SMS School Band and Woodwind Trio. She is looking forward to participating in the upcoming provincial public speaking and math competitions, as well as her first Canada Wide Science Fair. Water testing by University of New Brunswick students prompted Olivia to investigate the water quality and use of water fountains at her school. She hopes to continue her study of drinking water in the future, focusing on the quality of bottled water and the impact of the use of disposable water bottles. Olivia encourages prospective science fair participants to ask questions and be persistent.

Abstract:The water at three school water fountains and one faucet was tested for lead. 75 students were surveyed about the frequency and source of the water they drank at school. Studies showed that the majority of the students frequently drank from the school water fountains. The tested water was found to be safe but should be run before being consumed in the morning.
