I'm John Burns Duynisveld and I'm 15 and go to Pugwash District High School. This is my second CWSF. I do multiple sorts, such as curling, golf, and basketball. I am also involved in 4-H. In my free time I listen to music, read, and play video games. After graduation I plan to pursue a career in a science-related field, such as a research scientist. My project this year was inspired by my project last year. Previously, I had looked at oregano oil and pigs, and was only able to measure weight gain. This year, with chickens, I was able to look further into the oregano's effects. This is because chickens are easier to have large numbers of and have a shorter life span, allowing me to look at the effects at diferent stages of the chickens life and also post mortem.

Effect of Oregano Oil on Broiler Chicken Production & Coliform Bacteria Levels

Abstract:The effect of oregano oil supplementation on production of free range broiler chickens was studied. Chickens were fed a control diet or an oregano supplemented diet. Oregano supplemented groups grew faster than control chickens. Chickens given oregano had reduced total coliform and E. coli counts. Oregano supplementation in broiler chickens lowers pathogenic bacteria counts in the gut, allowing more energy to be put towards growth
