I am in Grade 8 at Bruce Middle School in Winnipeg. I play guitar in the school Jazz Band and tenor sax in the Concert Band. Other activities I enjoy are snowboarding, running and hockey. I am a Corporal in the 220 Red River Air Cadet Squadron and this winter competed in the Manitoba Provincial Air Cadet Biathlon Championship where I finished fourth. For three weeks this summer I will be participating in Basic Survival Training in Cold Lake, Alberta, as part of the Air Cadet Program. My very favourite activity is fishing, which is appropriate because my name is pronounced "Fin". Over the years I have noticed a decrease in the number of native fish species that I catch near my cabin on Lake Manitoba and an increase in the number of carp. This concern is what led me to do this project. In the future I would like to do further research on effective ways to remove carp from waterways. If I could give advice to other students thinking of doing a project I would tell them to be committed, because sometimes it ends up being a lot more work than you thought it would be!

Fish Fuel
Region:St. James-Assiniboia
City:Winnipeg, MB
School:Bruce Middle School
Abstract:Asian and common carp are invasive fish that are damaging the aquatic ecosystems of North America. The purpose of this project is to suggest creating a commercial carp fishery to eliminate carp and to use the waste from this fishery to produce a renewable biofuel. Experiments were conducted to compare carp biodiesel to biodiesel from two other sources - canola oil and cod liver oil.
