Claire - Claire Scrimini is a grade 10 student from Burnaby, BC. Actively involved in her community, she is the co-founding president of the Science Leadership Club at her school. The goal of her club is to inspire and ignite children’s interest in science. Throughout the school year, she visits elementary schools to teach and mentor Science Fair students. As well, she has started several fundraisers and volunteers for various causes and she volunteers regularly. She is an athlete and is a member of several sports teams and her interests include science, travelling and languages. She was recently awarded top student in English and French in her grade. Aware and concerned that burning fossil fuels is killing the planet, Claire and her twin sister Vanessa began to look for solutions which led to their project. They were determined to find the best microalgae-fungi combination for biofuel that would offer an alternative to fossil fuels. They concluded that the use of Rhizopus stolonifer paired with Chlorella vulgaris (the selected microalgae) was the answer. Her advice to other students considering doing a science project is “think like a proton and stay positive.” -Unknown
Vanessa - Vanessa Scrimini is a grade 10 student from Burnaby, BC. Her interests include travelling, learning new languages and meeting new people. As well, this soccer player is actively involved in supporting her community. This year, she is one of only 30 students throughout Canada to be selected as an Education First Canadian Youth Ambassador. Recently, she has travelled to the Dominican Republic on a community development trip, and will be going to Ottawa to make a community program presentation to MPs and Senators. Vanessa is also the co-president and founder of the Science Leadership Club at her school, in which she mentors students on science fair. Last year, she won gold at the regional science fair and competed in the Canada-Wide Science fair. This year, her project once again qualified for CWSF. After learning about the negative effects of climate change, particularly burning fossil fuels, Vanessa and her twin sister Claire were determined to find a solution. They concluded that the use of Rhizopus stolonifer paired with Chlorella vulgaris is a viable alternative. Vanessa’s advice to students, “Science Fair is an amazing experience and the effort and time put into it is well worth it!”
