Torrie - My name is Torrie Spence, I am 16 years old. I am from Ebb and Flow First Nation. I go to Ebb and Flow School. I've been doing science fair projects for 7 years. I also play volleyball and am on my high school volleyball team. When i graduate I'd like to go to university or college to study medicine and become a paediatric nurse or doctor. I've been with the Manitoba First Nations Science Mentorship for 3 years. The inspiration for our project is the very highly growing concern of diabetes and obesity in First Nation Communities across Canada. We wanted to show people what happens inside their body when they have a poor diet and exercise in hopes they will change their way of life. For future investigations I'd like to know why type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and what actually causes it. Also I'd like to know why type 1 diabetes in more common for kids and teenagers than it is in adults. The advice I'd give to a student thinking about a project is, to do something the involves their community and something that interests them.
Shauntay - My name is Shauntay Malcolm, I am 17 years old and I have been working with the Manitoba First Nations science mentorship program for 3 years, The inspiration for our project is the highly growing concern on diabetes and obesity across First Nations communities throughout Canada, We wanted to show people what happens in their body in hopes they change their diets. For future investigations, I am thinking about studying further into type 1 diabetes, for example, what causes it to be an autoimmune disease? Could this type of disease be prevented? Why is it so common for kids and teenagers? Type 1 diabetes is a very questionable disease and wherever there is a question, there must be an answer. The advice that I would give to a student thinking about doing a project is to do something that really interests them and do it because they want to do it and not because someone else wants them to do it.
