Biography
I'm Hannah Boone, a grade 11 student at Holy Heart High School in St. John's, Newfoundland. I hope to pursue a career in Medicine, in particular Surgery, so working on projects through the Department of Biochemistry and the Faculty of Medicine at MUN has been an amazing opportunity. I go to a great school where I'm on student council, am involved in mentoring, play on the volleyball team, play in 2 bands and sing in 4 choirs. I also play trumpet in St. John's Jazz. I play volleyball on the MAX Academy team (competing at Nationals), provincial team (that competes at the Eastern Elite Championships), and last summer I represented St. John's for beach volleyball at the NL Summer Games. I'm an assistant coach of a grade 8 girls volleyball team and, over the summer a coach of multiple NLVA junior elite teams. I like to take every opportunity I get to further my experiences through travel. I'm a Horizon Leadership scholarship holder, and have an entrance scholarship for the University of Western Ontario. I'm very excited to return to CWSF, and encourage other students to get involved, find good mentors (like mine!) and pursue science topics that excite them.

Tea Time! A Breast Cancer Treatment? Green tea + omega-3 effects on cell growth
Challenge:Health
Category:Senior
Region:Eastern Newfoundland
City:St. John's, NL
School:Holy Heart High School
Abstract:Breast cancer is a huge public health problem. Epigallo-catechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a water soluble catechin in green tea, has been shown to have anti-cancer effects. Docosahexaenioic acid (DHA), an omega3 fatty acid is lipid soluble. The synthesized EGCG-DHA compound has increased cellular absorption rates and reduces cellular proliferation in multiple breast cancer cell lines in culture.
