Hello, my name is Skye and I’m in grade 7. I have enjoyed doing school science fairs since grade 3. This my first year competing outside of school and making it to the nationals is really very exciting. Its way too soon for me to be thinking what I will be doing when I grow up but I have to admit ‘scientist’ sounds very good to me. In fact right now I can’t imagine doing anything else. Of course there lots of other things I enjoy doing: jazz alto sax, performing in plays, French club, horseback riding, playing rep soccer and many other sports. |
| Skye Preston Bioremediation with Basidiomycetes
Challenge: | Environment | Category: | Junior | Region: | York | City: | MARKHAM, ON | School: | Unionville Montessori School | Abstract: | Bioremediation is currently getting a great deal of attention, as the amount of organopollutants dispersed into the environment grows each year. Basidiomycetes secrete enzymes that can degrade a wide variety of organopollutants. This experiment explored the challenge of enzyme loss due to water runoff. The results supported the hypothesis that calcium alginate would improve bioremediation performance, by acting as enzyme immobilization material. |
