| Kate - Kate Berger is a grade 12 student attending Medicine Hat High School. This is her fourth Canada-Wide Science Fair and third with Jasveen Brar. Kate's projects have focused on the link between the environment and health, an area which inspires her to make a difference. At the 2012 CWSF, Kate and Jasveen won gold medals. Kate volunteers at her local hospital and for Praxis Science and Technology Hotline. Kate and Jasveen started an initiative called Operation Lab Coats and Beakers to promote science fair to youth. This program features after school workshops and mentorship for junior high students. Kate has been playing piano for ten years, is a participant in the Rotary Music Festival and is preparing to take her grade eight RCM exam. Kate also enjoys biking and observing wildlife. At her school, she is a participant in the Rotary Interact Club which fundraises for a microcredit project. Kate recently attended the Generate Energy Literacy Summit and is one of four leaders of her school's YES club (Youth for Environmental Sustainability). Academics are important to Kate and she is an honours student enrolled in the AP Calculus Program. Kate plans to pursue a degree in cell biology at university. | | Jasveen - Jasveen Brar is a grade 12 student attending Medicine Hat High School. This is her third Canada-Wide Science Fair with Kate Berger. Jasveen is very passionate about biology and our impact on the environment. At the 2012 CWSF, Kate and Jasveen won gold medals. Jasveen volunteers at her local hospital, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Alzheimer's Society and for Praxis Science and Technology Hotline. Kate and Jasveen started an initiative called Operation Lab Coats and Beakers to promote science fair to youth. This program features after school workshops and mentorship for junior high students. Jasveen enjoys reading and art. She has also played clarinet for five years in her school band. She is a participant in her school Rotary Interact Club which fundraises for a microcredit project. Jasveen recently attended the Generate Energy Literacy Summit and is one of four leaders of the YES club (Youth for Environmental Sustainability) at her school. Academics are important to Jasveen and she is an honours student. Jasveen is interested in pursuing a degree in microbiology at university. |

Environmental Distribution of Giardia and Cryptosporidium

A database on the normal concentration of these parasites was developed to be used in the early detection of outbreaks. (Oo)cysts were shown to adhere to the stomata of lettuce and spinach, as well as the tissue of fibrous roots. These parasites were also detected throughout our local watershed. |
