| My name is Lia Loebenberg and I'm a 16 year old from Montreal. In my spare time I enjoy art, yoga and doing theatrical makeup for my school plays. My sister is my inspiration for my health science project this year as she has struggled with cancer for over 7 years. I spent months in the lab to make a research project that she and others can be proud of. I have been part of over 10 science fairs in the past few years and have had a fair share of failures and successes. Future competitors can take solace in the fact that the purpose of these projects is not to win or lose, it's to remind you the importance of wanting to contribute to the well-being, comfort and health of our society. |

Since the protein anillin is being over-expressed in many cancer types, the anillin-producing gene will be suppressed in 3 selected cancer cell lines through RNA-mediated interference. Then, cell division will be monitored. The goal is to demonstrate the importance of gene expression profiling research in developing future targeted cancer treatments. |
